ChristieCare launches first program of its kind in State of Oregon

PORTLAND, Oregon, August 17, 2007 – The State of Oregon has recognized the necessity to provide additional support for young adults between the ages of 17 and 24 who: are no longer eligible for children’s services; are historically underserved; and who need ongoing intensive mental health treatment. They have partnered with ChristieCare, a leading provider of mental health services for children and families in Oregon, to open the first program of its kind in the state to address this population’s needs.

“The Addictions and Mental Health Division of the Oregon Department of Human Services recently awarded funds for residential resources for young adults,” said Robert E. Nikkel, MSW, Assistant Director of the Addictions and Mental Health Division of Oregon Department of Human Services. “We are pleased to be working with ChristieCare to open one of the first of these homes.”

ChristieCare is launching two of these programs, the first scheduled to open by the end of August 2007. The programs are named Mosaic, reflecting the bringing together of many diverse pieces (education, treatment, life skills, vocational skill training and recreation) to create a vibrant future for young adults. The young men and women participating in the program are motivated to move towards independence, and will direct the program focusing on their strengths and fostering hope and responsibility.

As with all ChristieCare programs, the Re-EDucation (Re-ED) treatment philosophy will guide the care that staff members provide to residents. At the heart of Re-ED are the beliefs that young people should not be raised in institutions but in their communities, and that the community experience is educational. Treatment is holistic, trauma-informed, individualized, client centered/driven and strength-based, focusing on skill development to assist these young adults in living meaningful, productive lives.

“Ultimately, the goal of this program is to support clients in their recovery,” said Lynne Hume Saxton, ChristieCare executive director. “That they might feel empowered and excited to embrace new experiences, which will move them toward independence.”
